5 ways to enhance a small bathroom

At The Original Bathroom Company, we have worked on a variety of bathroom renovations, some with a small space where we have had to be quite creative with the design. If you have a small bathroom space, do not fear! Our team of experts have some innovative ways to maximise and enhance the space available.

1. Lighting

It’s no secret that lighting plays an important role in the design process. In a small space, lighting can be a great way to make a room feel lighter and larger. When designing your new bathroom, we can explore the option of skylights, larger windows or even enhancing the lighting on the ceiling and around the room to brighten up the space.

2. Colour palette

It is often thought that in a small room, you should always use light, neutral colours and avoid darker, bold tones. Whilst these lighter colours can be a great way of opening up the space, smaller rooms can also be a great way to try out a darker and more bold colour. In a larger space, darker colours on every wall can be overwhelming, but in a small space this is less of an issue. Therefore, the size of the space is an advantage as it allows you to be more creative with the colours and tones you choose!

3. Ditch the bath and choose the right shower

If space isn’t on your side, it might be best to remove the bath all together and opt for a more luxurious shower fitting or wet room to open up the room and not utilise space where it’s not necessary. Glass shower doors are also a great option to keep the room open and avoid closing off areas.

You could also consider installing a “Quintesse” shower enclosure such as this one from Matki pictured below. These create more floor space as they utilise a corner of the room and are cut off across the corner maximising the rest of the floor space. Your shower door will also open at an angle which will reduce the chances of collision with other pieces in the room.

4. Consider all storage options

There are a number of elegant, slim basins, vanity and storage units available to provide the necessary functionality and storage but also minimise the space used. If storage space is less of a requirement, you could also consider removing the vanity unit all together and create a high end finish by having a chrome or special finish bottle trap installed under your washbasin. Reduced depth tall units can also be added to provide a fantastic storage option without taking up too much space, these can be a great way to make up storage space if you remove a vanity unit.

It is also worth considering alternative storage options that do not use up additional floor space, such as a shower niche. These shelves within the tiles allow for you to store items within the walls and keep the floor space open.

5. Small but mighty heating

For smaller bathroom spaces, it can be great to install a smaller heated towel rail to keep the room nice and toasty, but you don’t want to compromise on heat output. Some towel rails such as the Zehnder Charleston pictured below are smaller but have a high heat output, therefore you can save on wall space without compromising on comfort!
